Kulala

Kulala is situated on over 46 000 acres of private property and bordering the Namib Naukluft Park, the camps offers magnificent views of the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei, as well as magnificent mountainous scenery and vast open plains. Kulula consists of 3 beautiful and distinctively different camps : The Kulala Desert Lodge , Kulala Tented Camp and Little Kulala. Kulala Desert Lodge consists Twelve thatched and canvas chalets or “Kulalas” (Kulala in the Namibian language “oshiwambo” means “to sleep”) with en-suite bathrooms and showers set on wooden platforms to provide maximum airflow.

For outdoor enthusiasts, mattresses can be moved to the rooftop to sleep under the stars from a private star gazing platform. Kulala Tented Camp is a nine-roomed camp the camp is built at the foot of a mountain and comprises of 9 tents on elevated wooden decks which are linked to the main dining room, bar, reception area and swimming pool by pathways. Little Kulala has eight thatched and canvas chalets of Kulalas, each built on a wooden platform to provide maximum airflow. A popular option with outdoor enthusiasts is to sleep under the stars – mattresses are placed on private stargazing platform on top of each room.

Kulala Desert Lodge

Kulala desert Lodge is set in the valley floor with twelve thatched and canvas chalets with en suite bathrooms and showers. They are set on wooden platforms to provide maximum airflow. Mattresses can be moved to the rooftop to sleep under the stars on a private stargazing platform on top of the room; a popular option with outdoor enthusiasts on sultry summer nights. The main lodge has a lounge, bar, dining area and plunge pool. The verandah overlooks a waterhole and provides the perfect location to view and photograph the desert sunset.

Kulala Desert Lodge Facilities

Accommodating a maximum of 24 persons, guests are ensured of personal attention at all times. Guests are accommodated in private twin bedded “kulalas” with comfortable beds, en-suite facilities and a private verandah. For those staying longer there is the unique opportunity of spending a night under the star studded sky on your own private rooftop sleeping terrace.

Kulala Tented Camp

Kulala Tented Camp is about 15km (9 miles) from its sister camp Kulala Desert Lodge, the difference being that this is a small tented camp. It is an ideal venue for small groups with their own guide or vehicle on a self-drive safari, as it has six informal East African-style ‘Meru’ tents, with en-suite bathrooms and solar heated water. At night the camp glows from the light of lanterns and from millions of stars, and the whole place takes on a magical charm.

Desert adapted animals such as the magnificent-horned Oryx (also called Gemsbok) are often seen as well some rare species like Aardwolf spotted on night drives.

Kulala Tented Camp Attractions

Huge towering dunes, said to be the highest in the world, rise dramatically over 1000 feet above the surrounding plains at Sossusvlei. The spectacle of changing colours and the lonely Oryx silhouetted against red dunes is one which visitors and photographers from around the world come to savour and capture on film.

The Camp has been built near the top of a mountain, out of brick, rock, timber and thatch. There are only six luxury tents, each with its own private plunge pool. The rooms are superbly appointed and offer comfort and atmosphere with en suite bathrooms. The main living area is under thatch with an outdoor deck where guests enjoy dinner under the stars. The Namib is considered by many to be one of the finest star-gazing areas.

Little Kulala

There are only nine guest rooms, each with its own private plunge pool. The rooms are superbly appointed and offer comfort and atmosphere. The en suite bathrooms also have panoramic views overlooking the plains below and have hot and cold running water, showers and flush toilets. The main living area is under thatch with a pool. We have an outdoor deck where guests enjoy dinner under the stars and a dedicated stargazing platform with a powerful telescope for those keen on admiring the night skies. The Namib is considered by many to be the finest stargazing area in Southern Africa.
